CHROMITE is a mineral aggregate consisting primarily of chromospinel (approximately 90%) intergrown with serpentine, olivine, and pyroxene.
In some Ural villages and towns, it has long been called “black bath stone”; chromite is used in sauna heaters.
Chromite is a very heavy stone with a high density. Chromite also has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, meaning the stones will not crack during repeated heating and cooling. Chromite’s melting point is significantly higher than the maximum possible temperature in a sauna or bathhouse, reaching 2180°C. The chromium contained in naturally processed stones is non-toxic. When heated, chromite does not release harmful substances. In folk medicine, chromite is believed to alleviate colds.
